WHAT’S IN A TRANSLATION? TRANSLATING HINDI LITERATURE FOR READERS IN CROATIA

Traduttore – traditore is perhaps the most famous and most accurate saying about the nature of translator’s job. The translator is like a person walking a thight rope over an angry water in which currents of two distinct, sometimes very far and distant cultures, treaten to take the translator with them somewhere far. In this paper, I would like to talk about what’s the best way for a translator to grow as an expert, what challenges one can expect along the way in different genres: poetry, stories, novels. The examples will be taken from personal translators’s experience as well as from the work done by participants of Hindi literature translation workshop held in Zagreb few years back.
